  A Book Buying Guide: Toronto edition

  I was watching a show last week where one of the characters talks about drug use and it got me wondering how expensive that habit must be. Not that the expense is the biggest issue there (I mean there is the danger of addiction, the health effects, the fact that it’s illegal, etc), but the cost of it must certainly rack up, and I was thankful that I’d never risked trying anything.

  

  However, as I was standing in Chapters the next day, I realized that I too had an expensive addiction. Books.

  I don’t usually like reading contemporary fiction. I find that though some stories can be great, they lack that ability to completely drag you into their world. With fantasy, so much is new, so you really get into it because you have to. With contemporary, it really is life as it is and when I read, I like to escape life for awhile. For these reasons, I’ve never really been a huuuuge contemporary person.

  After reading Nicola Yoon’s upcoming novel The Sun is Also a Star, I might need to rethink this opinion.

  In my opinion, the most important thing a YA author can do in their novel is to create characters with flaws. And I’m not talking “Oh I think I’m not very pretty but for some reason every other character in this book is fawning over me” flaws; I’m talking real, deep rooted, human, day-to-day flaws. A character who makes mistakes, says totally wrong, cringe-inducing things, makes terrible life choices, and learns through it all; or doesn’t.
