Sunshine Is Forever

Sometimes you read a book and it’s entertaining for an hour, and sometimes you read a book and it shakes you to the core, Sunshine is Forever falls into the second category. The combination of narrative voice, suspense, and insight into mental illness is spellbinding. It’s a contemporary fiction that somehow feels magical. Be warned though it gets pretty real at times, especially towards the end.

A goofy, light-hearted read that demands you to suspend your disbelief and enjoy the funny, folly-filled adventure of Darlene and Ian, as their crude and high-brow ways, respectfully, collide in an amusing way. This read is like caving to that craving for poutine, a good idea in the moment, but you don’t really gain anything valuable from it in the long run.

Saints and Misfits

Many of us take for granted the fact that we see ourselves so often and easily in media and popular culture. Growing up I never had to look all that far for a strong female character who looked like me. Sure, there may have been certain issues from time to time, but the point is that the options were there. For my friends of colour however, it wasn’t that simple, and I find that fact to be very frustrating. I want all my friends to see themselves in media and popular culture in the same way I was able to see myself, and so though we still have massive work to do, it makes me really happy to see how many more diverse, own voices stories are being published. Not only are they being published, but they are being published to great success, breaking down stereotypes that “those books don’t sell”. This all brings us to Saints and Misfits.

An interesting exploration of mental illness and the power of opening up, of confronting our difficulties, of trusting that things will get better with time, some effort and the right support. All Things New is a surprising novel that is nicely woven together and will leave readers slightly dazed, but overall satisfied.
