Imagine a book that is on the surface She’s the Man meets Pitch Perfect – great premise, right? Well, now add in some really neat meditations on gender identity and beautifully sincere moments of empathy and you’ve got a good idea of how awesome Noteworthy is! I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a fun read with some really valid truths scattered throughout!

Ereader Upgrade - Sort of ;)

Back in December 2016, as I was packing for my 10-day trip to Korea and Okinawa, Japan, I was about to pack away my beloved Kobo e-reader only to discover that my trusted reading companion had died! Blank screen, no response to being plugged into the computer – panic! Between mourning the loss of Kirk (yes, I names my Kobo) and trying to figure out what physical book(s) to bring along with my on my trip, I was distraught.

Wintersong

I have never experienced a book hangover like the one I’m currently experiencing.

As I write this, it has been 5 days since I finished Wintersong. I wanted to give myself time for everything to settle before I wrote this review and 5 days later, nothing has settled. I guess if I had to describe Wintersong, I’d say it’s what happens when Labyrinth, The Phantom of the Opera and Eastern Europe have a baby. It’s got all the magic (and swoon worthy Goblin King) of the Labyrinth with a “she is my muse” musical twist a la Phantom. And of course, it all takes place in 18th century eastern Europe, adding a very cool historical component.

YA tropes. Love them or hate them, for better or worse, they are the driving force behind young adult fiction. While some are harmless, others are certainly less so. There’s the “different than other girls” trope, the “women can kick ass but only when wearing super impractical outfits” trope and of course, we can’t forget the “mysterious and slightly stalker-ish but it’s okay because he’s hot/rich/immortal/swoony/understands you so we’ll ignore it hero” trope.

A Torch Against the Night

During the school week, I drive a fair amount: about an hour and a half a day on average. And what I realized is that while I love busting out to a Bastille tune, I was losing a lot of potentially productive time. So I thought about it and decided to look into Audible, Amazon’s audiobook platform. I’m planning on talking more about my experience with Audible in a later post, but for now I’ll simply say that it’s pretty great. Mind you, I might be biased seeing as it led me to the amazing performance of An Ember in the Ashes and A Torch Against the Night.
